Day 9: Assisi - The signs of the pilgrim steps that cross

on the way, Sunday, June 22, 2008

Yesterday I spent the inner drive to continue this journey.
too good and too exciting was the arrival in front of the Basilica of San Francesco.
I downloaded, emptied, my journey ends here, I will take up to reach Poggio Bustone next year.
After all the idea I do not mind, I'll have a whole winter to find the right boost to push me to put his knapsack on his back.
Today I want to enjoy as a visitor any Assisi, indeed, as a pilgrim! Angela
fact suggested to me some places to see, significant and testify as a pilgrim centuries of pilgrims, getting caught with Santiago and Assisi.
So off in search of signs of the old pilgrims in Assisi.

The church of San Giacomo at Murorupto.

was built around 1000 by a wealthy gentleman to atone for his sins, traded a risky and long pilgrimage to Santiago with the construction of a church dedicated to the patron saint of pilgrims, St. James, who then gave it all ' Abbey of Farfa in Sabina.
Santiago is the first sign-Assisi.

Oratory of the pilgrims.

Along the road from the town square leads to the basilica, behind a glass door that protects it, there's this little chapel that was once the church hostel for pilgrims. On the right wall dominates the painting represents the miracle of the cocks of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. You see the young man hanged supported by St. James.
Santiago is the second sign - Assisi .

the old pilgrims' hostel .

What is now one of the many shops of Assisi, a time ... In the Middle Ages, it was a shelter for pilgrims as witness the two shells are carved in stone on the keystone of the portal (click on image below to enlarge). Located near the port that getting out of the town square opens onto the plaza of Santa Clara, was the meeting place and meeting place for pilgrims to Santiago in order to better protect themselves from the dangers of such a long trip, you put a group together and departed. This is the third sign
Santiago - Assisi

steps that cross over, yesterday's stories, stories of today.
steps of pilgrims who once walked to Santiago, walking pilgrims walking to Assisi today.
Nothing new under the sun, therefore, only the rediscovery of a world that seemed to be dissolved, and slowly, as is the slow time of the pilgrim, is being revived.
