The Buddhas of Bamyan were two huge statues of Buddha carved from a Buddhist sect in the cliffs of the Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan, about 230 km from the capital Kabul at an altitude of 2500 meters, a of the two statues, the male Salsal was 56 meters high and dates back to 1500 years ago, the small female Shamam was 53 meters high and had 1800 years.
Bamiyan is situated on the route of the Silk Road and is an important example of a cultural landscape which illustrates a significant period of Buddhism. The Silk Road was a commercial route linking the markets of China in Central Asia and South America, Middle East and Europe. It was home to many monasteries Buddhist and a thriving center of religious, philosophical and artistic from the second century onwards, until the Islamic conquest of the ninth century.
